Generating passive business income by teaching
January 24, 2021

Hi Friends,

This week I listened to an Indie Hackers Podcast eps #149. It is an interview with Greg Rog about lessons while building his passive income business, LearnUX.io. This passive business income is so successful that he just need to update the content of the website once in a month. I’ve found many interesting insights from this interview. As always, I will summarise each insights.

  1. Research product market fit and your interests.

An important step that Greg mentioned in that podcast is planning. I could tell that Greg is an organised founder. Based on the podcast, he explained the story of how he did some survey of product he wanted to create using medium and youtube. He also stressed that this is an important step because we can know if the product has market. It is a safety net before expanding the business further.

The second ingredient that he mentioned is about our interests. Greg agree that it is important to work with something that we love to do. In his case, he loves interacting with UX people. So, even the business is not success, he won’t regret as he can learn many things from other UX people.

  1. Every people can start teaching anytime

This is an interesting argument for me as well. I love the way Greg explained how everyone can teach something from their skillset. He took the example from Frontend technology (React and Angular). You don’t need to become an expert before you start teaching other people about the technology. In fact, you are learning by teaching that. I completely agree with his point of view. We can always learn something from new people. Even though you have become an expert in certain field, it is not a bad idea to return to the basic.

  1. You don’t always need teach a new thing. Use your own style and be creative!

Although there has been many courses about specific field out there, but nothing can stop you from teaching the same topic. For example, in frontend technology, there has been multiple courses about React Fundamental. But, You still can teach a course about react fundamental. Maybe the contents of the course will be the same, however every teacher has different way to teach it. It is not bad idea to start a new course about React from your perspective. Greg also suggests you can also start from there. Maybe there has been many courses about React in English but if you live in non-english spoken country, is there a course about react in your own mother language?
