Reflection about time of your life
February 06, 2021

Recently, I was interested with a tweet I read about time. The author mentioned that working full time as a way for company to have subscription with you. It is so funny analogy, but it’s true when I reflected again about that. Every full time worker gave their non-renewable resource “Time”. This resource is something that can’t be replaced no matter how rich or success you are. Every one just have 24 hours a day. That’s why it is correct to say that company is “subscribing” to the worker of the time they spent to do their work for company.

We know that time is a non-renewable resource. So, it’s important for us to use that time wisely. Assuming you sleep = 8 hours / day, cook + eat + take a bath = 2 hours/day. You have 14 hours left. Full time worker usually spend 9 hours of working Monday - Friday. It still gives them 5 hours extra hour. What will you do with these 5 hours left? You can just waste it in social media? watch Netflix until bored? having social activity with friends? exercise?

It is very important for us to optimise each activity that we do every day. Of course, we can’t optimise our time usage if we can’t measure it. We can measure the time by having a diary log or using calendar. From 2021 January, I have started to log every important activity daily. Now, we have got the measurement data, but how do we optimise it? 4-hours work week by Tim Ferris is an interesting book which has main point that we should increase the impact of our hourly work. I completely agree with that idea. We should leverage each activity of we do. It doesn’t mean that we ignore minor stuff, but we must be selective of each activity we choose to do. Will that activity give a good impact for us in long term? Does it align with your personal value?

I truly believe that we can increase the quality of our hourly activity. We just need to start be aware of every activity we do, measure it, and optimise it. Of course, every person will have different judgement of what is categorised as an important in their life. Each chapter of life will also give different challenges. A single man will have different struggle compared to a new father. No matter which stage you are, always remember that you need to assess which thing is important and how will you prioritise that important activity.
